A news or commentary thumbnail has a harder job than most, because the viewer may already have seen the story and needs a reason to watch your take on it. Words carry more of the weight here than in other genres, as long as they stay few enough to read at sidebar size.
The templates below are built for that: a headline on a solid bar, one question, one quote, a comment you are responding to, or two people in a discussion. They are also built to be accurate, because the words on the thumbnail are a claim that the video has to support.
17 templates, each measured. We drew every one at 1280 by 720 with its photo slots empty and ran the five checks from Thumbnail Autopsy on it, in all 10 colourways. Each card shows the colourway that measured best; 9 of the 17 pass all five checks in it. Measured on 2026-10-30. How we measure.

Headline Bar and Top Bar set the words on a flat colour, so they stay readable whatever photo sits behind them. That matters in news, where you often work with whatever picture you are allowed to use.
Ask the question your video answers
Big Question fills the frame with one short question and a line under it. It only works if the video really does answer the question, so write the answer first and the thumbnail second.
Quote people exactly
Quote Card is for words that someone actually said. Do not tidy a quote into something stronger, and put who said it on the panel underneath.
Respond to a real comment
Comment Card sets a viewer comment on a panel next to your face. Use a comment that really exists and that you get to in the video, and change the sample handle to one you have permission to show, or leave it generic.
Use pictures you have the right to use
News footage and agency photos are usually someone else's copyright. Your own photo, a licensed picture, or a chart you made yourself in Trend Line are the safer choices.
Before you upload
The numbers on this page describe each template as it opens. Once your photo and words are in, run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy for the same five checks on your real design, and look at it next to other videos with the YouTube thumbnail preview.
Frequently asked questions
Which news template should I start with?▼
For a story with one clear development, start with Headline Bar. For an explainer, start with Big Question. For a discussion with a guest, start with Two Guests.
How do I keep a news thumbnail from being misleading?▼
Treat every word on it as a claim your video makes. Use the same level of certainty as your reporting, so "JUST IN" only for something that is new and "CONFIRMED" only for something that is confirmed. These sample words are placeholders, so replace them with what your video supports.
Can I use a photo of a public figure?▼
That depends on where the photo came from and on the law where you publish, so check the licence of the picture first. A photo you took or licensed yourself is the safest starting point.
Do the measured results still hold after I add my photo?▼
They describe each template with its photo slots empty. A crowded press photo can lower the feed-size result, so run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy before you upload it.
