DIY viewers want to know two things before they click: what the finished job looks like, and whether they could do it themselves. A workshop photo full of tools and offcuts answers neither, and at thumbnail size it is mostly clutter.
These templates lead with the result. They cover the before and after, the mistake to avoid, the short list of steps and the one detail worth a closer look, each with a space for a cost or a time if that is your hook.
14 templates, each measured. We drew every one at 1280 by 720 with its photo slots empty and ran the five checks from Thumbnail Autopsy on it, in all 10 colourways. Each card shows the colourway that measured best; 5 of the 14 pass all five checks in it. Measured on 2026-10-30. How we measure.

Measured with the photo slots empty. Shown in Dusk, the colourway that measured best. None of the 10 colourways passes all five with the slots empty, so your photo decides the rest.

Then and Now is the strongest DIY layout, and it depends on a photo you can only take before you start. Mark where the camera stood so the after photo lines up with it.
Show the finished job, not the process
Stamped and Caption Box both use one full-frame photo. Use the finished room, the repaired part or the completed build, then keep the process for the video itself.
Put the real cost or time in the frame
Big Number sets one large figure beside a short line. A real cost or a real time tells viewers whether the project is within reach. Only use a number your video can back up.
Make the mistake the hook
Yes and No sets the wrong way next to the right way, and Warning puts the mistake on a band across the top. Both suit a repair that often goes badly when it is done the obvious way.
Pull out the joint or the fitting
Zoom Inset enlarges one part of a wide shot in a ringed circle. Use it for the joint, the valve or the fixing that the whole video turns on.
Before you upload
The numbers on this page describe each template as it opens. Once your photo and words are in, run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy for the same five checks on your real design, and look at it next to other videos with the YouTube thumbnail preview.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good DIY thumbnail?▼
A clear photo of the finished result, or a before and after in matching light, plus two or three words naming the hook: the cost, the time, or the mistake it fixes.
Should I show tools in the thumbnail?▼
Only if the tool is the subject of the video. A bench full of tools turns to noise when it is shown small, so clear the frame and let one object carry the picture.
How do I show several steps?▼
Three Steps and Checklist each carry three short words, which is about as many as will read at sidebar size. Grid of Four shows four stages of a project in photos.
Do the measured results still hold after I add my photo?▼
They describe each template with its photo slots empty. A dark garage photo can lower the contrast result, so run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy before you upload it.
