A beauty thumbnail is judged on detail that disappears when it is shown small. Skin texture, a fine liner and a subtle shade all blur together at sidebar size, so the design has to make the result obvious in some other way: a clear before and after, a close-up pulled out of the frame, or one product held big enough to recognise.
The templates below are built around those three moves. Several pair your face with a product or an enlarged detail, and the rest cover routines, honest verdicts and shade or price comparisons.
17 templates, each measured. We drew every one at 1280 by 720 with its photo slots empty and ran the five checks from Thumbnail Autopsy on it, in all 10 colourways. Each card shows the colourway that measured best; 5 of the 17 pass all five checks in it. Measured on 2026-10-30. How we measure.

Measured with the photo slots empty. Shown in Hot Sauce, the colourway that measured best. None of the 10 colourways passes all five with the slots empty, so your photo decides the rest.

Zoom Inset puts your full look in the frame and a ringed circle on top holding the close-up. It suits a lash, a brow or a patch of skin that would otherwise be lost at feed size.
Match the light in a before and after
Then and Now only works if the change is the only difference. Use the same window, the same angle and the same camera distance for both photos, because a brighter second photo reads as a filter.
Show the product you are talking about
Product Hero gives one product the centre of the frame with its price on a panel. Face and Thing is the same idea with your reaction beside it, which suits a first impression or a verdict.
Use a verdict rather than a description
Stamped sets one tilted word like "LOVE IT" over a full-frame photo. A verdict tells viewers what they get from watching, while a product name only tells them what the video is about.
Give a calm brand one calm layout
Negative Space uses one subject, one word and a lot of empty colour. It is the quietest layout here, so it stands out most in a feed of busy thumbnails, and it suits a channel with a soft, consistent look.
Before you upload
The numbers on this page describe each template as it opens. Once your photo and words are in, run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy for the same five checks on your real design, and look at it next to other videos with the YouTube thumbnail preview.
Frequently asked questions
Which beauty template should I start with?▼
For a transformation, start with Then and Now. For a single product, start with Product Hero or Face and Thing. For a technique, start with Zoom Inset so the detail stays visible at sidebar size.
Should I retouch the photos in a beauty thumbnail?▼
Keep any edit true to the result in the video. Viewers compare the thumbnail with what they see once they press play, and a result that looks different from the video costs you their trust.
How do I compare two products or shades?▼
Head to Head gives you two labelled photo slots with a VS block between them, and Yes and No marks one side with a cross and the other with a tick. Keep the two photos at the same size and in the same light.
Do the measured results still hold after I add my photo?▼
They describe each template with its photo slots empty. A pale backdrop can raise the clipped-white share, so run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy before you upload it.
