Podcast episodes on YouTube tend to look identical from one week to the next: two people, two microphones, the same room. A thumbnail that reuses that frame every week gives viewers no reason to pick this episode over the last one. The episode needs its own hook, usually a line someone said or the question the episode answers.
The podcast templates below are built to carry that hook. There is a quote card for a pulled line, a top bar layout for an episode headline over a wide photo, and face layouts for a host or a guest.
6 templates, each measured. We drew every one at 1280 by 720 with its photo slots empty and ran the five checks from Thumbnail Autopsy on it, in all 10 colourways. Each card shows the colourway that measured best; 3 of the 6 pass all five checks in it. Measured on 2026-10-29. How we measure.

Measured with the photo slots empty. Shown in Hot Sauce, the colourway that measured best. None of the 10 colourways passes all five with the slots empty, so your photo decides the rest.

Quote Card sets a short quote beside a round guest photo, with a name panel underneath. Choose a line that makes sense out of context and keep it to about six words.
Feature the guest, not the room
Viewers recognise people faster than studios. Face Right gives a single person most of the height, which beats a wide shot of two people at a table at thumbnail size.
Put the headline in a bar
Top Bar reserves a solid band across the top for the episode headline, with your photo below. The solid band keeps the words readable whatever the photo looks like.
Use the tag for the series
Corner Tag adds a small coloured tag in the top-left corner, like "NEW EPISODE". It gives the series a consistent mark without repeating the same full design every week.
Change something every week
Keep the layout and colourway as your show identity, and change the photo and the words for each episode. A saved template in the editor makes that quick.
Before you upload
The numbers on this page describe each template as it opens. Once your photo and words are in, run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy for the same five checks on your real design, and look at it next to other videos with the YouTube thumbnail preview.
Frequently asked questions
What should a podcast thumbnail show?▼
The guest or the host, plus the one idea that makes this episode different: a quote, a question or a topic. The studio itself rarely needs to be in it.
How long can the quote be?▼
Short. Quote Card breaks the quote over up to three lines at a size that reads at the sidebar size, and lines that run long shrink to fit, which makes them harder to read.
How do I keep a consistent look across episodes?▼
Pick one layout and one colourway, then save your finished design as a template in the editor. Each week, load it and swap the photo and words.
Do the measured results still hold after I add my photo?▼
They were measured with the photo slots empty. A dark studio photo can lower the contrast result, so check the finished thumbnail in Thumbnail Autopsy.
