Cooking YouTube thumbnail templates

In cooking videos the food is the star, and food photographed under kitchen lights often comes out flat and brown. A cooking thumbnail has to make the dish look like something you want to eat at a size smaller than a postage stamp, and then add just enough words to say why this recipe is different: faster, cheaper, crispier.

Cooking has the most templates of any genre here. Most are built around a full-frame food photo with words placed where they will not cover the dish, and a few are built for comparisons and step-by-step videos.

11 templates, each measured. We drew every one at 1280 by 720 with its photo slots empty and ran the five checks from Thumbnail Autopsy on it, in all 10 colourways. Each card shows the colourway that measured best; 3 of the 11 pass all five checks in it. Measured on 2026-10-29. How we measure.

What works in cooking thumbnails

Shoot the dish close and bright

Fill the frame with the food and use daylight if you can. Corner Tag, Stamped and Marker Note all place a full-frame photo under the words, so a close, bright photo matters more than anything else.

Pick one texture word

One Word sets a single word like "CRISPY" across the frame. Texture and taste words tell viewers what the dish is like faster than the recipe name does.

Show the method in three

Three Steps prints three numbered boxes with a word under each, like chop, sear, serve. It suits recipes where the promise is that it is simple.

Compare store and homemade

Head to Head and Then and Now both give you two photo slots. Put the shop-bought version next to yours, labelled, and keep both on the same plate and background.

Use three photos for a menu

Triptych splits the frame into three tall photo slots with one headline across them. It suits meal prep, a week of dinners, or three versions of one dish.

Before you upload

The numbers on this page describe each template as it opens. Once your photo and words are in, run the finished thumbnail through Thumbnail Autopsy for the same five checks on your real design, and look at it next to other videos with the YouTube thumbnail preview.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good cooking thumbnail?▼
A close, bright photo of the finished dish, and one or two words about what makes it worth making. Keep the words off the food itself.
Should cooking thumbnails show the cook?▼
They can, but the dish usually carries more weight. Most cooking templates here are photo-first; if your channel is personality-led, the vlog templates have face layouts.
How do I show a recipe is quick?▼
Put the time or the ingredient count in the words, like the sample "Ready in 20 minutes", or use Big Number with the count. Only print a number your recipe actually meets.
Do the measured results still hold after I add my photo?▼
They were measured with the photo slots empty. Food photos are often warm and low in contrast, so check the finished thumbnail in Thumbnail Autopsy before you upload.
