Turn a Photo into a Pencil Sketch

Four styles, live controls, and your photo never leaves the browser.

Drag the slider to compare against the original as you tune it. Most online sketch tools upload your photo to their servers and give you one button. This one runs entirely on your device and lets you actually control the result.

How a photo actually becomes a pencil drawing

The effect is not a filter in the Instagram sense, and it is not AI. It is a specific, old darkroom trick that happens to work beautifully in a browser, and knowing what it does is the difference between clicking once and getting a good result.

  1. The photo is converted to greyscale, because a pencil has no colour.
  2. That greyscale copy is inverted, so lights become darks.
  3. The inverted copy is blurred. How much is the Detail control.
  4. The two are combined with colour dodge, which brightens the base according to the blend. Where the blurred negative closely matches the original, the result goes to white. Where they differ, which is exactly where edges are, a grey line survives.

That last step is why the technique works: colour dodge is effectively an edge detector that produces soft graphite-like strokes rather than hard computer lines. Everything else on this page is control over those four steps.

What each control actually does

ControlWhat it changesWhen to move it
DetailThe blur radius in step 3. Low keeps fine texture and thin strokes; high produces broad, soft shading and drops small detail.Turn it down for portraits where you want eyelashes and hair. Turn it up for busy scenes that come out looking like noise.
DarknessA contrast curve on the finished sketch, pushing mid greys toward black or white.Raise it if the sketch looks washed out, which is common on bright or low-contrast photos. Lower it if the drawing has gone muddy.
Edge strengthOverlays a Sobel edge pass, which finds sharp changes in brightness and darkens them.Add it when you want defined outlines, for buildings, products and line-art looks. Leave it at zero for a soft, purely tonal drawing.
Paper grainA subtle noise texture over the whole image. On, when the flat white background looks too digital. Off, if you are going to print or trace it.

The four styles

Which photos sketch well

The technique rewards clear edges and a plain background, and struggles with the opposite. A portrait against a wall, a pet, a building, a car, or a single object on a table all work well. A crowd scene, dense foliage or a heavily textured background become grey mush, because every leaf and brick reads as an edge worth drawing.

Two practical fixes when a photo does not work. Raise Detail, which blurs away small texture and keeps only major shapes. Or cut the subject out first with the background remover, place it on white, and sketch that instead. The second approach is what produces the clean portrait sketches people actually want to print.

Why this one does not upload your photo

Most free sketch tools process on a server. That means your photo is transmitted, sits on somebody else's disk while it is worked on, and you are relying on a stated retention policy for what happens next. For a holiday snap that may be fine. For a photo of a person, or anything with GPS coordinates in the metadata, it is a real decision that most tools do not make obvious.

Every step described above runs on an HTML canvas inside your browser tab. The file is read from your device into memory and never transmitted, which is also why the preview updates as you drag a slider instead of making you wait for a round trip. If you want to check what your photo is carrying before sharing it anywhere, the EXIF viewer reads the whole metadata block.

Pencil Sketch Questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The whole effect runs on an HTML canvas in your browser and the file never leaves your device. That is also why the preview updates live as you drag a slider rather than making you wait for a round trip. Many other free sketch tools do upload your photo; their own pages say so.
Is this AI?
No, and that is deliberate. It is a greyscale, invert, blur and colour-dodge pipeline, which is a well-known darkroom and Photoshop technique. It is fast, it runs offline, it is completely predictable, and unlike an AI model it never invents detail that was not in your photo.
My sketch looks like grey mush. What do I do?
That is usually a busy background: every leaf, brick or fold reads as an edge worth drawing. Raise Detail to blur away small texture, and raise Darkness to restore contrast. If the subject matters more than the scene, cut it out with the background remover first and sketch it on white.
My sketch is too faint and washed out.
Raise Darkness, which pushes the mid greys apart. Bright, low-contrast photos give the dodge step very little to work with. Switching to the Charcoal style does the same thing more aggressively.
Can I get outlines rather than shading?
Yes. Choose the Technical style, or raise Edge strength on any style. That adds a Sobel edge pass which darkens sharp brightness changes, giving defined lines with less tonal shading. It suits products, buildings and anything you intend to trace.
What resolution do I get back?
The full resolution of the photo you put in. The on-screen preview is scaled down so the sliders stay responsive, but the download is rendered at the original dimensions.
Can I keep the colours?
Yes, choose the Coloured pencil style. It applies the sketch to brightness only and preserves the original hues, so you get coloured strokes on white instead of grey ones.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Pick a photo from your camera roll, drag the sliders, and drag the divider to compare against the original. On iOS the download is handed to the share sheet so you can save it straight back to Photos.
